The History of AO Quick-Connects

Here goes....it's a long story.

Back in the mid-70's the Swiss created a group of surgeons that were known as the ASIF group; that stands for Association for the Study of Osteosynthesis. They began importing their fracture stuff to the United States; Smith Kline was the distributor here in the states. I suspect that some marketing whiz decided that ASIF was too long, or complicated. So the name was shortened to AO....Association for Osteosynthesis. That's when they got sued by American Optical; turns out that they had the name AO trademarked. So, the AO group then morphed into Synthes in the late 80's or 90's, can't remember for sure. The original AO group consisted of Maurice Mueller, Algower, and several other prominent European Orthopods.
